Desert Walking ….

From April 5th till 29th I’ll be on the playa surrounding Wendover, on the boarders of Utah/Nevada, USA co-directing and documenting a project called “Desert Walker“. If you have issues with your projects, drop me a mail – and I’ll answer if I get a moment.

In the meantime, good luck, work hard, play seriously!

Discussion: The case against writers in the gaming industry

Eivind and Peder are both working on developing compendiums that are focused on aspects of story telling (narrative) and character development in game design as their self chosen assignment. Both are reflecting over the the similarities and differences of fictional writing and cinematic techniques related to this issue. I found this article, Opinion: The Case Against Writers In The Games Industry by Adam Maxwell, that airs some of the issues brought up in my last tutorial with both Eivind and Peder.

[ .... In a striking counter to current industry thinking, game designer Adam Maxwell (Auto Assault) argues that they are not, drawing on his own experiences to state that they are always better replaced with another designer.]

Maxwell’s article fired a serious of counter reactions/comments. Interesting reading for anyone concerned with this issue …… opinions anyone?

Et fond for gode formål

Do you have a project that you are working on that could do with funding and fits into the description below?

Kaja og Bårds fond for gode formål (fofogofo) ble opprettet 2. juni 2007 etter ønske av Kaja Wright Polmar og Bård Jemtland, som et alternativ til tradisjonelle bryllupsgaver.

Fondet skal gi tilskudd til prosjekter av kunstnerisk, politisk og kulturell art, basert på humanistiske og frihetlige verdier.

Første søknadsfrist til fondet er 1. mai 2008.

Litt grunnleggende informasjon om fondet:

• Det er et hovedpoeng at prosjektene skal komme flere til gode enn den individuelle søker. Prosjektene skal ha et samfunnsmessig nedslagsfelt, gjerne involvere flere deltakere i gjennomføring, og nå ut til mange mennesker.

• Det stilles forøvrig ingen direkte krav til prosjektenes innhold. Prosjekter med religiøst innhold og/eller utførelse vil dog ikke bli vurdert.

• Styret vurderer søknader, og bevilger penger ut fra vedtektene.

• Personer i en vanskelig fase i livet, f.eks. med dårlig økonomi ved alvorlig sykdom, kan prioriteres.

• Rapport for gjennomført prosjekt, med grundig dokumentasjon, må leveres ved prosjektets fullførelse.

• Søknader som ønskes vurdert skal innsendes fondet innen den 1. mai. Fondsmidler tildeles én gang årlig, og offentliggjøres den 2. juni. (Dersom dette faller på en helligdag, benyttes første følgende normalvirkedag.) Tildelingen av midler kan skje i en eller flere puljer.

During Link’s presentation of her self chosen project before easter in which she presented her comic strip “Bubble Pop”, she outlined certain hurdles that she needed to overcome, including colouring styles and techniques. Here is a link to some online tutorials for digital cell shading techniques, Manga style. While ultimately I encourage you to develop your own aesthetics, the tutorials may never the less be helpful.

Gnomonology.com also offers online professional tutorials for various visual media production (photoshop, max, maya, etc).

Ole Magnus hasn’t made a project blog for his assignment Gravity UnLTD, but you can check out his sketches on his deviant site here.

Look for the Nika and Nexus images, as well as Freedom, Journey, Journey 2, Awakening and the Possessed sketches, all of which he presented at the last session on March 14th.
